IG Increasing, Improving Firearms Counter Inspections During 2023
As part of the Exchange’s commitment to safety, the Office of the Inspector General (IG) is focusing on inspecting all firearms counters in 2023, ensuring sales are conducted safely and comply with all federal, state and local regulations.
In 2021, the IG shifted to no-notice firearms inspections to better align with stringent inspection standards set by the industry and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
During the first few months of 2023, Assistant Inspector General III Paul Martinez and Assistant Inspector General II Chenelle Husband produced an internal training plan for IG team members and coordinated numerous firearms counter inspections. Upon Martinez’s arrival to the Exchange as an IG associate in 2015, he was tasked with creating the IG firearms inspection program from scratch.
Martinez and Husband are now heading efforts to train other members of the team.
Associates and store leadership involved with firearm sales counters should be well acquainted with EOP 40-06 and collaborate regularly with members of the Executive Group-firearms program specialists. Additional information is also available on the IG portal under the firearms tab.
Most important, good working relationships should be developed and maintained between the Exchange firearms sales counter associates/leadership and the local ATF office/agents under whose jurisdiction they fall.
