While not officially recognized as a diagnosis, social media addiction is a real issue many people face. Recognizing, understanding and overcoming this habit is essential.

  • Signs of dependency: If you feel anxious without your phone, are constantly checking it, or are disappointed by a lack of engagement on your posts, you might be dependent.
  • Designed to hook you: Social media platforms are built to keep you scrolling. Unexpected content can trigger the release of dopamine, motivating repeated phone checks.
  • Reducing use: Be mindful of when you reach for your phone automatically. Replace this behavior with offline activities, disable notifications and take regular screen-free breaks.

Excessive social media use can negatively affect mental health, leading to addictive behaviors and distorted perceptions of reality.

  • Negative effects: Overuse can cause isolation, loneliness, impulsivity, anxiety, depression and reduced attention span. It can also fuel low self-esteem and a fear of missing out, disrupt sleep and decrease physical activity.
  • Global impact: Research from the University of Michigan indicates about 210 million people worldwide are addicted to social media and the internet. Teens average 7 hours and 22 minutes of screen time daily.

To mitigate these effects, set limits on phone use and devote more time to self-care.

Social media can look like connection, but for many people it becomes pressure. The most useful platforms in the future may be the ones that help people slow down, reflect, and share honestly instead of constantly performing.
