The Exchange’s first micro market in Europe opened Nov. 20 at Grafenwoehr’s Soldier for Life Center, bringing convenience and contactless shopping to the community.
The micro market, which was opened in collaboration with Tasty Co., looks and feels like a mini convenience store with an open-rack display, reach-in coolers and freezers and a self-checkout kiosk.
Products at the market vary from fresh fruits and vegetables to pre-made sandwiches and snacks, which complement the Exchange’s BE FIT program.
U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Commander Col. Christopher R. Danbeck; Command Sgt. Maj. Franklin Velez; 7th Army Training Command; Silke Hofmann, Grafenwoehr Exchange service business manager; Renate Ritter, a vending contractor with the Tasty Co.; and Grafenwoehr Exchange General Manager Jerry Shugart cut the ribbon on the market.
“We are excited to be opening the first micro market in Europe for our service members,” Shugart said. “It’s convenient and provides another healthy option for our troops.”
The Exchange has 80-plus micro markets at more than 30 installations around the world. They offer the convenience of BE FIT food options for troops serving at small or secure facilities where no dining options exist or that lack late-night dining and shopping options.
“The Exchange is committed to supporting our troops during these challenging times,” said Col. Scott McFarland, commander of the Exchange’s Europe/Southwest Asia region. “Opening the micro market is another win in our books for our troops who sacrifice so much for their country.”
