The Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Exchange has opened the first drive-thru Starbucks franchise operated by the Exchange in Alaska. The grand opening last month was celebrated with giveaways, refreshments and a ribbon-cutting attended by Air Force 673rd Mission Support Group commander, Col. Dustin Hansen; and Air Force 673rd Force Support Squadron chief enlisted manager, Chief Master Sgt. Jason Brandy.
“We’re excited to have this new drive-thru at JBER,” Hansen said. “It’s a great example of how the Exchange works to enhance everyday convenience for service members and their families, especially during Alaska’s challenging winter months.”
The new Starbucks replaces laundry cleaners and expands on the previous kiosk operation inside the food court.
“The drive-thru has been a welcome addition,” said JBER Exchange General Manager Keola Chan. “It offers convenience for patrons who prefer to stay in their vehicles during Alaska’s long, cold winters.”
In addition to the drive-thru, the location features cozy indoor seating. Construction began in July as part of a project that also included a $4.8 million image upgrade for the Express. The Starbucks portion was completed by mid-September.
In addition to command participation, the grand opening included complimentary samples and a drawing for a $50 Exchange gift card and a Starbucks gift basket. Following the updates of the Fort Richardson Burger King, Fort Richardson Subway and Elmendorf AFB Burger King, this Starbucks marks the fourth completed construction project for the JBER Exchange in fiscal 2025.
