Two associates, who have never met, submitted identical content and have been named winners of the 2026 Health & Safety Motto Contest. The annual contest encourages associates across the Exchange to think creatively about how individual actions contribute to the organization’s overarching safety mission.
This year’s winning motto, “Bee the change for a safer Exchange,” was submitted by Lea Steelman, department manager at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming, and Ashley Clark, office assistant at Hurlburt Field, Florida.
Steelman, who has been with the Exchange for about four months, submitted her winning motto during her first month on the job.
“I saw the email for the contest and said, ‘Yes, I can come up with something for that,’” Steelman said. “I’ve been in management for many years, so safety has always been something I think is very important. It’s just better if everybody does the safe thing rather than risk somebody getting hurt.”
Clark has worked for the Exchange for four years, and her husband is an active-duty Air Force chief with nearly 20 years of service. Their daughter, Haley Clark, recently started working at their Exchange’s Popeyes restaurant in the food court.
“I thought it was kind of funny that two associates from completely different Exchanges came up with the same safety motto,” Clark said. “I didn’t know that was even a thing that happens, but it reinforces the idea that safety here actually matters and that people want to be part of making a difference.”
Both winners will receive a $100 Exchange gift card, a challenge coin and a special certificate of appreciation from the HQ Health and Safety Office in recognition of their contribution.
“’I’m grateful for being recognized for this fun contest that focuses on being a part of everyone’s safety,” Clark said. “I hope that it shows that small actions matter, and when you do your part, you create a safe environment.”
Exchange Vice President of Loss Prevention and Safety Tommie Caudle praised the winning entry for capturing the spirit of empowerment and everyday responsibility that supports a culture of safety across the organization.
“Reviewing the submissions is always a highlight, as it showcases everyone’s creativity and uniqueness,” Caudle said. “Small actions can lead to a significant impact. Simple tasks like assisting with a team lift, cleaning up a minor spill or removing a pallet from the floor may seem trivial, but they can make a huge impact by preventing accidents down the line.”
The winning motto will be featured in upcoming Health & Safety communications throughout 2026.
