Family Serving Family: Exchange VP’s Nephew Named Army’s Flight Surgeon of the Year
Dr. Benjamin Stork, who was recently named the Army’s Flight Surgeon of the Year, tends to a man injured during one of the hurricanes in Puerto Rico last fall. Stork’s uncle is Pacific Region Regional Vice President Rick Fair.

The Exchange’s regional vice president over Korea, Hawaii, Samoa and Kwajalein is beaming after his nephew, Dr. Benjamin Stork, was named the Army’s Theodore Lyster Flight Surgeon of the Year recently. Stork, an Army captain, just left for Afghanistan’s Bagram AB.

A trained osteopath, CPT Stork received an outpouring of accolades from his commander of the 101st Combat Aviation Bridge at Fort Campbell, Ky. He is “the epitome of Soldier physician and is a sterling example of our tradition of smart, engaged flight surgeons tracing a long proud lineage back to Theodore Lyster,” wrote LTC John Hellums, the brigade’s chief surgeon, in a memo nominating CPT Stork for the award.
Lyster is known as the father of aviation medicine.
CPT Stork volunteered to accompany his medical team to Puerto Rico to help the community recover from Hurricane Maria. Exchange associates were there, too, serving the island’s military families. While in Puerto Rico, he flew more than 30 hours participating in patient care and in search-and-rescue missions.
