Justin Deleon Guerrero, sales area manager at Guam’s Andersen AFB Exchange, has another award to hang on his wall: the 2018 USO Guam Service Member of the Year for the National Guard.

Deleon Guerrero won the coveted Soldier of the Year competition at the unit, brigade and state level and now moves on to represent the Guam Army National Guard at the regional contest. His awards already include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and the Guam Commendation Medal.

‘Serving brothers and sisters in arms’

Deleon Guerrero’s Exchange role and service in the National Guard member fit perfectly into the Exchange’s core value of Family Serving Family.

“When I wear my military uniform, I have my brothers and sisters in arms who I serve with, and we look out for each other,” he said. “When I put on the Exchange uniform, I have the chance to take care of my brothers and sisters and ensure that they leave each day with a smile on their face.”

‘Welcomed with open arms’

Deleon Guerrero has served in the National Guard for six years, and his military roots run deep. His oldest brother serves in the Navy. His father-in-law and brothers-in-law and aunts, uncles and cousins serve in the Army. More aunts and uncles are Army and Marine retirees.

“I was honored to accept the position with the Exchange because as a service member, I know how we look to the Exchange as our home away from home,” Deleon Guerrero said. “Traveling with the military during the past few years means that I’ve had a chance to experience a lot of great places but also not-so-great places. However, one thing has never changed: no matter where I went, there was an Exchange present not only to satisfy my needs but also to be greeted and welcomed with open arms by Exchange associates who understand their importance.

“We are there for the troops, just like they are here for us on the front lines. We are right beside them to give our continued support 100 percent of the way.”

Store Manager Amanda Schulze said she and associates are proud of Deleon Guerrero’s accomplishments.

“The Andersen Exchange is proud to have him as part of our team,” Schulze said. “By being a part of the military while working at the Exchange, he knows what our customers want, how they feel and everything about them because he, too, is a Soldier. He can relate to each of the customers.”

‘A great officer’

National Guard leaders praised Deleon Guerrero, a specialist in the maintenance platoon of the 1224th Engineer Support Company, where he ensures unit equipment are mission capable and serves as a subject-matter expert.

“He maintains high expectations of himself and continues to be a model Soldier for all junior enlisted,” National Guard leaders said, in his award citation. “His commitment and dedication prove he is on the path to be a great non-commissioned officer for the Guam National Guard.”
