Nishan Claussen, a Veteran and buyer for the Exchange in Sembach, Germany, was selected as this yearโs Health and Safety Motto Contest winner.
His catchy, winning motto, โ2022โฆSafety begins with you!โ leads the charge that associates play a major role in workplace safety.

โI wanted to create a motto that resonated with everyone,โ said Claussen. โThis motto subtly places accountability on associates and aligns with our core valueโuse good judgment.โ
Claussen received the grand prizeโa $100 Exchange gift card along with a challenge coin and certificate of appreciation from the Health and Safety office.
โWhen I first started at the Exchange about a year ago, I had a very detailed safety briefing. I noticed last yearโs motto on banners, emails and other places, โsaid Claussen. โWhen I was notified that I won this yearโs contest I thought back to my first dayโthis motto will be everywhere, too.โ
More than 800 entries were submitted by associates worldwide.
โIt takes all of us to make the workplace safe and it must begin with everyone,โ said Vice President of Loss Prevention Steve Boyd. โEach year, the motto contest increases awareness of workplace safety and reduces workplace accidents. Comparing years 2021 to 2020, weโve saved a little over $3 million by having lower accident rates, per OSHA formulas.โ
Four runners-up each won a $50 Exchange gift card, coin and certificate.
1st Runner Up: Angela Salvi, computer operator, Ramstein KMC, โPrevent the Worst, Put Safety First!โ
2nd Runner Up: Kim Q. Pepin, Loss Prevention manager, Luke AFB, โKeep Safety in Mind, Help Accidents Declineโ
3rd Runner Up: Katrina Jones, contract specialist II, Exchange HQ, โ2022 โ Safety is What We Do!โ
