Throughout the first MSM/GM Conference since 2019, Exchange Director/CEO Tom Shull emphasized the word โ€œencourage,โ€ which has its roots in the French โ€œen courageโ€โ€”give courage. As the conference wrapped up its third day, Shull told more than 200 main store managers and general managers that they exemplified giving courage.

โ€œWhat you do every day is absolutely stunning,โ€ said Shull, an Army Veteran. โ€œCertainly for me, being able to return and complete my journey with my military community has been a blessing beyond belief. Especially reconnecting these last three daysโ€”I canโ€™t tell you what itโ€™s done to energize me, to encourage me.โ€

Shull preceded his remarks by leading the audience in a loud cheer:

โ€œREADY! RESILIENT! STRONG!โ€

And then the climax and the theme of the conference: โ€œEXCHANGE STRONG!โ€

Exchange Director/CEO Tom Shull, accompanied onstage by Exchange Senior Enlisted Advisor Chief Master Sgt. Kevin Osby, leads an Exchange cheer at the MSM/GM Conference.

A photo of Kenneth O. Preston, the longest-serving Sergeant Major of the Army and a close friend of Shullโ€™s, appeared on the big screen. It was accompanied by a quote: โ€œSoldiers and their families are the heart of our organization, and we will not fail them.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s Ken Preston,โ€ Shull said. โ€œIt all comes from the heart. Itโ€™s not just the Warfighter, but the families who are part of the military unit. I just want to share with you this quote, because this is really what this conference has been all about. Itโ€™s not only talking about the best customers in the world, but talking about them in terms of themselves and their families, because itโ€™s a unit.โ€

Shull urged the audience members to continue to find their inner selves, and to encourage one another and their teammates every day.

โ€œBecause thatโ€™s what itโ€™s about: Motivating, inspiring, rewarding all of our teammates starts with each of you,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™ve seen all the connections and the joy these last few days. For me, itโ€™s been an amazing welcome home.

โ€œThink about itโ€”itโ€™s been almost four years since weโ€™ve been able to do this,โ€ Shull continued. โ€œI really just want to say God bless each of you and your families every single day. Travel safe, and always remember, family serving family!โ€

After his remarks, Shull left the stage, but he quickly returned to present his Director/CEO challenge coin to the Store Operations team that coordinated the conference: Vice President of Store Operations Nicola Carter, Store Communication and Support Manager Jetdean Martin, Senior Business Program Specialist Lisa Lamers and Program Specialist Melissa Moring.

โ€œThis has been an amazing conference,โ€ Shull said. โ€œThis team has done a remarkable job in bringing us all back together. Their hearts are totally in it. Weโ€™re so honored that they brought us back together to have this amazing event. Iโ€™m so grateful to every single one of you.โ€

Exchange Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Jason Rosenberg at the MSM/GM Conference closing lunch: “This has been a family reunion this week.”

At the closing lunch on Thursday, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Jason Rosenberg also praised the Store Ops team, and otherwise underscored Shullโ€™s comments.

โ€œThis has been a family reunion this week,โ€ Rosenberg said. โ€œTruly a family reunion. What an amazing week weโ€™ve all had. โ€ฆ I saw a lot of connecting, I saw a lot of mingling among different regions, I saw a lot of homecoming with our vendor family. It was awesome.โ€

Rosenberg said that his first MSM/GM Conference was in 1997, more than 25 years ago, when he was the main store manager at a small store at RAF Croughton in the United Kingdom.

โ€œAt the end of that week, I went home, and I fell in love with AAFES all over again,โ€ he said. โ€œI was so energized and motivated and excited about the company. And when I was watching all of you this week, I think every one of you is going home like that. Itโ€™s 26 years later, and Iโ€™m going home today. And guess what? Iโ€™ve fallen in love with the Exchange all over again, and itโ€™s all because of you guys.โ€
