Fifty years after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Exchange Director/CEO Tom Shullโ€”who has since built a lifetime of distinguished leadership to the Nationโ€”recognized the Armyโ€™s future leaders at the 2023 U.S. Military Academy graduation ceremony on May 27.

On a historic day that featured Vice President Kamala Harris as the first woman to deliver the West Point commencement speech, Shull, a 1973 U.S. Military Academy graduate, presented 2nd Lieutenant bars to the graduating Cadets.

โ€œThis was a full-circle moment, returning on the 50th anniversary of my graduation to where my military career began,โ€ said Shull. โ€œThis is a huge day for these Cadets, and it was truly an honor to be a part of this ceremony as these dedicated men and women embark on a life of service and sacrifice to our Nation.โ€

Shull is a Soldier for Life with a lasting legacy of dedication to service members, Veterans and their families. His father served 30 years in the Army, spending more than 40 months in combat. Shullโ€™s graduation from West Point came three years after his brother, John.

โ€œMy father always wanted to come to West Point but his math tutor took the entrance test and ended up doing slightly better than my dad and so he received the only appointment from western Nebraska,โ€ Shull said. โ€œSo Iโ€™m honored to be here today on his behalf and follow in the footsteps of my brother.โ€

Shullโ€™s service to country continues today as the first civilian to lead the Exchange.

โ€œParticipating in the ceremony is yet another example of how the Exchange is fully nested as part of the military family, but especially with future leaders of the Army.โ€ Shull said. โ€œItโ€™s an important signal to the whole military community that we are fully dedicated to supporting those who serve, especially their Quality-of-Life. Team AAFES is all in for service members and their families, past, present and future.โ€
