The Exchange Office of the Inspector General (IG) is often misunderstood. While the IG conducts administrative investigations involving fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement, it does not function as a criminal investigative or disciplinary body.
If potential criminal conduct is identified during an IG inquiry, the matter is promptly referred to the Office of Special Investigation or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The IG may assist in an administrative capacity—such as providing relevant documents—but criminal jurisdiction and authority remain with law enforcement. From there, the IG’s involvement shifts to supporting the process administratively—such as sharing documentation or background information if requested to do so by the law enforcement agency.
Understanding these distinctions ensures proper reporting of misconduct. Concerns related to fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement should be reported to the IG. Allegations involving criminal activity should be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency. This ensures every matter receives proper attention through the correct investigative channels.
