CAMP FOSTER – The Yokota Exchange partnered with the group Yokota Thrives in support of Yokota families with autism, ADHD and other special needs to make a night of movie magic they might not normally get to see.

“We worked closely with the [group] coordinator to determine the most comfortable environment for the kids,” said Corey Bennett, Yokota East Side Theater manager.

During a special sensory movie night recently, the lights were brighter in the auditorium for the duration of “Zootopia 2.” The sound volume was set lower, and trailers were removed from the showing.

Kids were also free to get up and move around.

Many of the families said that it was the first time they have ever been able to take their child to the movies and were happy and grateful for the opportunity to do so.

“Initiatives like this are exactly why the Exchange exists,” said Col. Jason Beck, the Exchange’s Pacific Region commander. “Our goal is to make sure all service members, and their families feel at home while stationed here in the Pacific.”

The Yokota Theater partnered with the East Express and Hunt Brothers Pizza as well, treating guests to pizza, which was a big hit with the kids.

“Zootopia 2” coloring sheets and crayons were also provided for the kids’ enjoyment at the entrance to the auditorium, with tables available just inside for them to color on.

Yokota Thrives was created in May to share resources and push for inclusive base events.Anyone on base can join the group if they have a child with any special needs, including but not limited to autism and ADHD. The group holds events every month and teams up with the Exchange, USO and FSS.

“I wanted to create a space where families of children with special needs can feel safe, express their needs and share resources while in a foreign country,” said Latoya Singleton, Yokoto Thrives group coordinator.
