Month of the Military Child is here, and teams across Merchandising, Services, Food and Fuel, Store Operations, the Exchange Credit Program and Corporate Communication have joined forces to deliver a monthlong celebration fit for our Nation’s youngest heroes. From sweepstakes to in-store events, associates have built a lineup designed to honor the resilience, spirit and strength of military brats worldwide.
“Thanks to the teamwork across multiple directorates, this year’s Month of the Military Child celebration continues to reflect the hard work and creativity of teams across the organization—another example of how the Exchange stands with military families all year long,” said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Rich Martinez, the Exchange’s senior enlisted advisor, whose father served in the Army. “The military brat experience has evolved over the years, and the responsibilities we ask of our service members impacts our kids because they serve too; we ask them to make sacrifices and challenge them to adapt to new environments consistently.”
The Exchange officially kicked off the celebration March 27 with a sweepstakes, giving away more than $22,000 in toys and Exchange gift cards.
Shoppers can also pick up this year’s free collectible military brat patch, designed by senior graphic designer Jacob Celesile, at checkout while supplies last. Each shopper may receive up to five patches.
Celesile’s design was submitted as part of the Exchange’s internal design contest and selected by Martinez. Celesile’s grandfather served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
“The patch is and has always been intended to recognize and acknowledge the children of our service members,” said Celesile. “The dandelion flower is the official flower of the Military Child because of the flower’s unique ability to take root and bloom anywhere in basically any condition.”
The in-store fun doesn’t stop there. MILITARY STAR® cardmembers can take advantage of an additional 10% off toys, bicycles and accessories through April 30. Free events for military families will be held weekly at more than 50 Exchanges featuring various themes and toys. Military kids can also enjoy Free Treat Day on April 18 at more than 140 Exchange locations, with complimentary treats from participating restaurants including Arby’s, Burger King, Charleys, Panera Bread, Pizza Hut, Popeyes, Qdoba, Subway, Starbucks and Taco Bell.
“As soon as we finish [planning] the current year, we start thinking about the next year and providing suggestions based on current toy trends,” said Exchange Hardlines Buyer Ann Marie Flint. “We are thankful for our suppliers’ support and proud of our Month of the Military Child programming, as we are hoping to bring a little joy to our littlest heroes and recognize their sacrifices.”
Each Exchange will host its own special celebration for Purple Up Day, and families are encouraged to contact their local store for details.
