The Exchange lives up to its “We go where you go” motto with stores serving locations all over the world, from the South Pacific to the North Atlantic, from Kuwait to Korea and more.

Many of these locations are remote and unusual, even in CONUS, where branch stores serve smaller military communities. In this new Exchange Post series, we look at the stories behind these stores, starting with the Fort Pickett Exchange in Blackstone, Virginia, roughly a 60-mile drive south and west from Richmond.

What makes it unique: The Fort Pickett Exchange plays a critical role in supporting a smaller, mission-focused installation where flexibility, responsiveness and strong community relationships are essential. Fort Pickett requires a hands-on management approach and close coordination with supported units to ensure Soldiers and families continue to receive essential services despite a limited operational footprint.

Major units supported: The Exchange directly supports the Fort Pickett training and readiness mission, serving Army National Guard units, Reserve components, rotational training elements and predeployment forces. Support is tailored to fluctuating customer populations driven by training schedules, exercises and temporary missions. Customers include combat divisions, infantry and armor units, all military branches and participating foreign military training partners.

Size of the team: Three. Team members routinely perform multiple roles, demonstrating strong versatility, adaptability and teamwork to sustain service levels while responding to changing operational demands.

Number of facilities: Essential retail and service facilities designed to meet core customer needs include a small retail store, launderette, vending, US Mobile Patriot, and food trucks. This streamlined footprint allows the team to focus on operational efficiency, accuracy and strong customer familiarity.

Installation history: Originally established as Camp Pickett in 1942, the installation was created to support large-scale Army training for World War II. About 46,000 acres were acquired to support extensive infantry operations. It became Fort Pickett in 1974. Today, it serves as a primary Virginia National Guard training site supporting Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps units. The Maneuver Training Center spans 41,000 acres, includes 21 ranges supporting nearly all Army weapons systems, an Army airfield, and barracks capacity exceeding 5,000 personnel—demonstrating Fort Pickett’s enduring adaptability and mission relevance.

Store history: The Pickett Exchange has evolved alongside the installation, continuously adapting services and merchandise to align with changing customer needs, population shifts and training cycles. Its mission remains focused on providing dependable access to field essentials, food, beverages and convenience items that directly support morale and operational readiness.

Quality of Life: Life at Fort Pickett offers a quieter pace compared with larger installations, characterized by a close-knit, rural environment. This setting supports focus, teamwork and strong working relationships while allowing for balance between professional responsibilities and personal time.

What associates can do during time off: Associates can enjoy outdoor activities such as walking trails, nearby parks, and local recreational areas. Small-town dining, regional attractions, and community event are a short drive away, supporting work-life balance and personal well-being.
