In today’s rapidly changing society, artificial intelligence (AI) is a recurring theme. AI is technology that can draft, summarize and analyze information to enhance human productivity.

During May’s LINK presentation, EVP/Chief Human Resources Officer Dr. Patrick Oldenburgh Jr. emphasized that associates deserve clarity and not hype surrounding the future of AI at the Exchange.

“AI is a productivity enhancer, not a people replacer,” Oldenburgh said. “One thing that’s not going to change as we are in this constant state of change is our mission, our vision, our values, our commitment to people.”

AI is best at automating processes such as summarizing, organizing and synthesizing large amounts of data, and humans are best at empathizing, prioritizing and making decisions. Together, the duo can create stronger outcomes by turning AI output into meaningful decisions and customer service.

“AI is not sentient, it can’t make its own decisions,” Oldenburgh said. “Because we need to have that critical eye on the outputs of AI, we are needed as part of that entire cycle.”

Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity AI are the only platforms approved for use at the Exchange. While both can do the same tasks, Copilot is best for drafting and organizing, while Perplexity is recommended for research and analysis. However, Oldenburgh stressed that associates should also use discretion while using these programs. Information provided by Copilot and Perplexity should be verified because AI can produce errors.

Oldenburgh encouraged associates to experiment with AI and said that while he sees it as a tool to evolve processes, giving associates more time to connect and better serve those who serve.

“AI helps reduce time that is spent on repetitive tasks and that can create more room for service, responsiveness and care,” Oldenburgh said.

The LINK sessions are open to all associates. For more information, associates can contact CorporateLearning@aafes.com or join the Exchange LINK Team channel on Microsoft Teams.
