Shoppers at six installations will see more checkout options in the coming weeks as the Exchange introduces self-checkout lanes at main stores and Expresses.

The Exchange plans to roll out an additional 300 self-checkout lanes to more than 80 main stores and Expresses by yearโs end. The project, a 2022 value lever, will enhance the shopper experience by reducing time spent queuing and providing more options that match the outside-the-gates experience. The lanes will also help stores handle customer surges, such as after morning PT or during meal breaks and keep lines moving.
โThe self-checkout lanes provide more optionsโsome shoppers want the quick grab-and-go convenience of self-checkout while others prefer the assistance of and interaction with a cashier,โ said Nicola Carter, Exchange vice president of store operations. โNow we can give an improved shopping experience to both groups.โ
The first self-checkout kiosks opened for business at the Fort Benning Exchange main store on April 19, with the post mini mall right behind on April 21. Shoppers can pay at self-checkout with a MILITARY STARยฎ, debit or bank-issued credit card.
โThe Exchange has additional access and security requirements that private retailers do not,โ Carter said. โWeโve been working to solve for yes on these challenges and provide our shoppers the best experience when checking out.โ
In addition to Fort Benning, other Exchange locations implementing self-checkout over the next month are Lackland Air Force Base, Fort Sam Houston, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Fort Meade and Joint Base Andrews. On average, PXs and BXs will see four self-checkout stations and Expresses will have two.
โThe COVID-19 pandemic sped up industry trends as shopper behavior changed,โ Carter said. โThe Exchange pivoted quickly to expand buy online, pickup in store service and implement curbside pickup. Self-checkout is one more way to meet our shoppersโ evolving needs.โ
