Exchange Rolls Out 1,000th Self-Checkout, With More On the Way
The rollout of self-checkout lanes continues at PXs, BXs and Expresses, with more locations on the way.
Last month, the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys main Exchange unveiled the organization’s 1000th self-checkout kiosk, signifying the technology’s rapid growth. The checkout’s June 14 opening coincided with the Army’s 248th birthday.
Self-checkout, a strategic priority for the Exchange, was one of 2022’s biggest success stories. Since self-checkout’s April 2022 debut at Fort Benning (now Fort Moore), more than 360 PXs, BXs and Expresses have installed self-checkout lanes, with more than 32 million transactions processed.
The registers—which have been popular with service members and their families, with some stores reporting adoption rates close to 100%—benefit customers by speeding up the checkout process, reducing time spent in line.
Stores benefit, too, with the lanes helping them manage peak customer times such as after morning PT or during meal breaks. By the end of fiscal ’23, the Exchange expects to have more than 1,500 self-checkout registers across more than 400 stores.
“We are thrilled with accomplishments of the self-checkout rollout, and we are looking forward to bringing this modern shopping experience to the remainder of our stores to further enhance everyone’s customer experience,” said Vice President of Store Operations Nicola Carter. “After all, we are serving the best customers in the world.”
Shoppers can pay at self-checkout with a MILITARY STAR®, debit or bank-issued credit card.
