September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
September 7, 2023 |
During September, it is important to recognize Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Observing the month raises awareness about the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and equally important, it encourages those at risk to seek the help they need.
Recognizing the signs in individuals contemplating suicide is crucial to prevention:
- Changes in behavior
- Talking about dying
- Appearance of depression
- Withdrawal from others and usual activities
- Stark personality changes or large emotional swings
According to Magellan Healthcare:
- Forty-six percent of people who die by suicide have had a diagnosed mental health condition, but research shows 90% may have experienced symptoms of a mental health condition.
- Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10–14.
