Where Heroes Work: Dan Hill, Fort Bliss

Dan Hill heads shot with Where Heroes Work text.

One in a series spotlighting Veteran and military spouse associates, who bring unique experiences to the Exchange mission.

Who he is: Dan Hill, services business manager, Fort Bliss

Years with the Exchange: nearly 33 years, including breaks in service

Military connection: He’s a military spouse, military brat and proud father of an active-duty Airman. Hill’s wife served in the Air Force, and his father-in-law served as well.

Most memorable Exchange moment: Hill recalls his 2015 deployment as one of the most impactful moments of his career. “It was only six months, but it’s something I’ll never forget,” Hill said. “It reinvigorated my sense of why we do what we do. It reminded me of that Air Force term—’reblued’—like when you go through Airman Leadership School and rediscover your purpose. If anyone’s on the fence about deploying, I always tell them—do it. You won’t have a more rewarding experience.”

Why he joined the Exchange: Hill began his Exchange journey in 1992, fresh out of high school. Hill’s friend’s mom worked in HR and told him the Exchange was hiring. “I applied—and that’s how it all started,” Hill said.

As a military kid, the Exchange was a constant in his life.

“It was where we went for everything—shopping, haircuts. It just felt familiar,” Hill said.

It was also where he met his wife. “She worked at the Exchange before joining the Air Force,” Hill said. “If it weren’t for the Exchange, I would’ve never met my wife.”

Why the Exchange is a great place for Veterans and military spouses: “The benefits are incredible. You won’t find a retirement plan like this anywhere else,” Hill said. “And the people here truly care about serving those who serve. It’s not just something we say. It’s real. It is family serving family. I know that’s our motto, but it’s true. I’ve worked other places, taken breaks in service, thought the grass might be greener—but nothing compares to the Exchange.”
